i have my own hunch that it wasn’t damas’s fault for the coup but rather a sporadic and impulsive decision that cause Praxis to do what he did, the thing about Jak II’s story is that its left up to interpretation mostly.. but there is a correct string of events to pick apart…we know from Ashelin that as a little girl she used to look out of the window of the palace and imagine a “better place” then there’s The Baron’s propaganda which paints him as a protector, who wants people to enlist to sacrifice themselves for the greater good, then the super soldier programs on top of the piercer bomb plan, my guess is initially he wanted to end the metalhead threat so his daughter could live a better life, he went behind Damas’s back and tried to assault the nest and capture the nest cracker gun Mar built…but his forces were devastated completely wiped out and he was severely injured…he survived but most likely lost a chunk of his brain…Your cerebrum interprets sights, sounds and touches. It also regulates emotions, reasoning and learning. Your cerebrum makes up about 80% of your brain and a decent chunk was destroyed so most likely he could barely help his impulsiveness and rationality, he only acted without thought as well as suffered PTSD and surviver’s guilt, perhaps that’s why he betrayed his friend and took control of the city..he stopped being able to care and wanted revenge, he called the metalheads “vile creatures” and planned to wipe them out…the dark warrior program was meant to make super soldiers who could survive the wastes and kill the metalheads..everything he had done was for one obsessive goal and in a way makes him a Captain Ahab Allegory from Moby dick…he chased that whale until it ended with the death of him and his forces…in a way it makes The baron a tragic villain, it’s not that he doesn’t care he’s just incapable due to his brain damage and it was all out of impulse and initially a want to make the world a better place and it ended up making him chase the phantoms of his past defeat

Jak 3 confirms that Jak is Mar in the cutscene of Damos' death. He doesnt say he is named after Mar or the house of Mar like you claim. Here is the end of the dialog of the cutscene "Please promise me one thing. Promise me you'll find my son, Mar. You'll know him when you see this... he's wearing an amulet just like it. A symbol of our lineage with the great house of Mar. Save the people Jak, they need you" Now, I've heard both sides of the Mar argument, and for a while, I didnt know a side to take. But having heard the cutscene and with subtitles, there is no more argument.
